Artist's Statement

Blake Zoephel’s Artist’s Statement

Light illuminates all form. When I am using metal point, pastel, graphite and charcoal to convey the luminosity of light and the ephemerality of nature, I am trying to create an image that evokes the same reaction that I experienced myself.   My emotional reaction to the world is the central theme to all of my work. Whether it is a nude that has north light gently falling across the skin or a brightly lit landscape with beautiful flowers, light brings all of these things into our consciousness.

The process of building the illusion of form fascinates me.  Working with color and shading is necessary to bring the beauty and importance of an image is the joy that I find in creating a piece. I want to evoke an emotional reaction from the viewer as they experience the image. The small things that might be overlooked but are still important for us to notice are what excite me. In a molecule the whole world is contained. Illuminating that small piece of the world is my goal.
